Getir has now officially announced that she will be leaving the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. With Getir’s departure, its Gorillas brand will also disappear from Europe.

FreshDirect, Getir’s subsidiary in the United States, will continue its activities, although this too was initially sold.

The markets from which Getir operates are responsible for 7 percent of global turnover. With this decision, Getir chooses to focus its attention on its home market in Turkey, where it is best positioned to further grow its delivery service.

In parallel with this decision, Getir has completed a new investment round, led by Mubadala and G Squared. The money raised will be used to further invest in the Turkish branch of the company.

The employees will be informed about the departure today.

Getir will still have to go public in the Netherlands. As of November 20, 2020, Gorillas falls within the scope of the mandatory decision of the industry-wide pension fund for the food business (BPFL). From that date, Gorillas must pay pension contributions for employees who are (or have been) employed and provide their details. The company asked the judge for relief, but that was not successful, according to a recent judgment.

The fact that Gorillas is organized differently from a traditional, physical store does not matter – in view of the scope provision in which the ‘virtual store’ is also described. In this context, reference is also made to the ruling of the Central Netherlands District Court of 28 February 2023, which, in short, ruled that Gorillas’ activities fall within the scope of the collective labor agreement for the Food Company.

The company has 14 days to provide employee data to Bpf Levenstan via the employer portal regarding the (former) employees who are (were) employed by Gorillas in the period from November 20, 2020 to the date of this judgment.

The company (part of Getir) must also provide an audit report from a registered accountant expressing an opinion on the accuracy of the employee data provided by Gorillas,
