Neighborhood of The Hague is already working on the most beautiful Orange Street in the Netherlands: ‘We are hanging 60 kilometers of flags’

The European Championships in Germany are still more than a month and a half away, but the residents of the Marktweg in The Hague are busy making their street bright orange. “We have 60 kilometers of flags to hang. It is not normal how many decorations will be hanging,” says organizer Danny van Dijk with great pride in Goedemorgen Nederland on NPO 1.

The Marktweg has twice previously been awarded the title of ‘most beautiful orange street in the Netherlands’. This year too, the enthusiastic local residents hope to walk away with the coveted title. “We are now going to extremes with lighting,” says Danny in unadulterated Hague.

Three years ago, King Willem-Alexander paid a surprise visit to the street. “That was very special. We knew that Mayor Jantje van Zanen was coming, but then I suddenly saw the king get out,” local resident Giovanni Koning remembers well. ”We gave a bit of a tour. He said he thought it was wonderful.”

Resident Marcel Vink adds: “Very nice man. You wouldn’t say he’s so friendly.”

You never walk alone

This year the neighborhood hopes to welcome another king: Lee Towers. ”We all have You Never Walk Alone tattooed on our forearm,” says Marcel.

What if organizer Danny has to make a prediction? “Just win, take that bus through the street, with that cup in your hand, bam, have a nice drive and celebrate.”

Another local resident adds: “Final against Germany. And then we roll them up completely. 0-3!”.
