On January 1, 2024, the Netherlands had more than 83,000 physical stores. That is 1,100 more than last year, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands.

This breaks the downward trend of the past decade. Since 2010, there has only been a slight increase in the number of physical points of sale in 2022 and this year. The largest relative increase in physical stores was in the municipality of Oostzaan. 20 percent more stores were added.

Our country still mainly has clothing stores: 13,428. With an increase of 2.4 percent, supermarkets have now taken over second place. There are now 6,672 of these, just above the number of shops selling other household goods (6,438).

The number of physical stores increased most in the bookstore category. This sector now has 660 stores (+12.86 percent). This while the number of bookstores fell the most in 2021 by 8.1 percent. The number of stores selling white and brown goods decreased the most (-3.27 percent). There are now 975 of them left.

The increasing trend in the number of online stores also continues. On January 1, 2024, there were more than 95,000 online stores in the Netherlands.
