Captain Achilles Veen suffers cardiac arrest: final against Goes postponed

--

The captain of amateur football club Achilles Veen suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday afternoon in Oisterwijk, during the district cup final against Goes. This happened around the 25th minute. An ambulance and an air ambulance were immediately called in. The 26-year-old footballer was taken to hospital by ambulance. Considering the circumstances, he is doing well. The match has now been definitively stopped.

The helicopter landed on the Trinitas field in Oisterwijk where the final will be played this Ascension Day.

The final battle for the cup in the KNVB South I district, which had started at five o’clock, was stopped after the incident. After consultation with all parties, it was decided around half past seven to stop the match permanently. The Goes players were against continuing, because they did not want to cheer for a possible goal.

It is unknown when the match between the two fourth division clubs will be played. Achilles Veen led 2-0 when the meeting with the Zeeland club was stopped.

Michel Smits, treasurer of Achilles Veen: “It is coincidentally the second time we have experienced something like this. This is quite a shock. Two years ago something similar happened to our assistant trainer.”
