The American rock band Guns N’ Roses is outraged by the use of their music at Pope Benedict’s funeral. The Vatican had not asked the band for permission in advance.

The body of emeritus Pope Benedict XVI was interred in the crypt in St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday. In addition to work by Beethoven and Queen, a Guns N’ Roses song was performed during the funeral. The band is not happy about that to say the least.

“We do not want to be associated with the Catholic Church. If we had known that our music would be used at the funeral, we would never have agreed to it,” says Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose.

The Vatican regrets the fuss, but is not aware of any harm: “Music is used at every funeral. This is no different with a papal funeral. It is not customary to ask permission for this,” says a spokesperson. “We thought the music was very appropriate. ‘Sweet Child o’Mine’ is a song that fits well with the life of Pope Benedict.”
