A district of the South Korean city of Daejeon has caused panic with an emergency message about wild dogs. The municipality warned of a rogue group of about seventy wild dogs. Ultimately it turned out to be three escaped small dogs.

The municipality resorted to an emergency message based on an eyewitness, a municipal official reports. The witness spoke of seventy large wild dogs on the outskirts of town.

“We wanted to quickly inform and warn people. There was talk about large dogs,” the official told the news agency Reuters.

Twenty minutes later, the municipality sent a new emergency message with a correction. It stated that three dogs had run away from a farm and that the animals had been captured. According to the local police, the dogs were small.

Reuters clarifies that the dogs did not escape from a breeder for restaurants. Eating dog meat is a centuries-old tradition in South Korea, as in many other Asian countries. South Korea is working on legislation to end the consumption of dog meat.
