Can you imagine it? That a stranger lives in your house for weeks? Radio DJ Edwin Evers has experienced it. Unbeknownst to him, an unknown person lived in his house for several weeks.

“About three weeks ago the maid came and said it was a mess up there. The stairs are full of mud, the cushions are dirty, there are towels everywhere. I said: that’s not possible, because no one has slept there,” Evers explains in his afternoon show Radio 538.

Dirty pillows, mud on the stairs, towels everywhere; it is a big mystery for Evers. No one has visited and no one is known to have slept upstairs. He goes to take a look himself, but doesn’t think anything of it, because he knew no one had visited. The maid cleaned up the mess and that was that.

Until Evers saw something strange on his camera about five weeks ago while he was working in his studio at night. On camera images he sees a person with a bicycle standing in front of his fence looking at his house. But because nothing else happens, Evers takes no action. After all, the person is not doing anything illegal.

Garage

But then the situation becomes even stranger: last Thursday, Evers suddenly saw a person he did not know walking behind the garage on camera images. “I’m working in the studio, look at the camera and see someone I don’t know walking behind the garage. I was completely shocked. And then the penny dropped in one fell swoop,” says the radio DJ, who then takes action and calls in the police.

Rushing officers arrest the intruder. “So that guy lived there for about five weeks: slept, laid out his clothes, showered. We got upstairs and the shower was still warm. I was in complete disarray. It’s such a strange feeling having someone in your house. It’s very scary.”

Confused person

The intruder appears to be a 43-year-old man from Hardenberg, who is currently still in custody. It would have been a confused person who had no shelter. But it is not clear how he was able to get into the guest room for weeks without anyone noticing. “Why doesn’t anyone help him? Why does he have to cycle around and sleep at someone’s house? I was very angry, but not anymore. It is a very sad and pathetic story.”
