A judge in Los Angeles has placed singer Brian Wilson under supervision. The 81-year-old composer and co-founder of the Beach Boys suffers from a form of dementia and is no longer able to care for himself, ABC reports.

The request for guardianship was submitted by his children, including the two singers of the group Wilson Phillips.

His wife Melinda, who died at the end of January at the age of 77, helped him for years and guided him during his illness. Now that she is gone, Wilson’s family has asked for a curator to be appointed. According to the family, Wilson is “easily distracted”, often makes “spontaneous, irrelevant or incoherent statements” and is “often unable to muster the decency appropriate to the situation”. According to his doctor, the singer is taking medication to slow down his illness.

Wilson is known as one of the most influential pop musicians of the twentieth century. The American founded the Beach Boys together with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love and good friend Al Jardine. The group broke through in the 1960s and scored hits such as I Get Around, California Girls, Kokomo, God Only Knows and Good Vibrations. Brian released eleven studio albums solo. The singer released his latest album, At My Piano, at the end of 2021, in which he performed old work by the Beach Boys at his piano.
