Insurers believe that billions in damages are being claimed because a large container ship collided with an American bridge on Tuesday. The British insurer Lloyd’s even expects it to lead to the largest maritime claim ever.

A container ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge near the American port city of Baltimore. The bridge collapsed as a result, leading to at least two deaths. Four others are still missing. The port in the American city is no longer accessible.

Lloyd’s CEO Bruce Carnegie-Brown reported on Thursday that he would be surprised if the disaster did not lead to the largest damage claim for maritime insurers ever. He expects billions of euros in claims.

This not only concerns the damage to the bridge itself, but also compensation for relatives of the victims. In addition, many companies are suffering damage due to the closure of the port, which is one of the most important on the American east coast.

An analyst from the British bank Barclays also thinks that companies will submit billions in claims to insurers. The damage to the bridge itself alone is likely to amount to 1.2 billion dollars (1.1 billion euros). In addition, surviving relatives can claim hundreds of millions. And on top of that are the damages for affected companies.
