According to a police spokesperson, a report was received that explosives were present in the metro station. That is why an immediate evacuation from the metro station in the center was necessary, the police spokesperson said. The area around the metro station was cordoned off with police tape and people were asked to leave the area. Metro 52 only ran between North and Amsterdam Central during the two-hour closure. Several trams detoured.

The Explosives Reconnaissance Team (TEV), a police team that routinely responds to reports of explosives, arrived on the scene and conducted more than two hours of investigation in the metro station. “They investigated everything there and found no explosives,” a police spokesperson confirms.

Around 8:15 p.m., officers removed the police tape on both sides of the Rokin and the street was reopened. The metro station was also opened again and within minutes the platforms were full again.

During the cordon, just after half past seven, the police issued a description of a man who probably had something to do with the suspicious situation. This is a light-skinned man, 1.75 meters tall, wearing a black puffer coat and a black and white scarf. People who see him are advised not to approach the man themselves, but to call 112. Police arrested a man later in the evening.

An employee named Wolf (23) just had her last day in the Amsterdam Dungeon at the Rokin on Sunday. She says there are rumors of a bomb threat, probably by a confused person, at Rokin metro station. Inside the Dungeon, several employees wonder what is going on. They are allowed to leave the building, but only on the Kalverstraat side. “Now I hope to be able to come to Central Station,” says Wolf, “I will be picked up there.”

Street closed off

Traffic wanting to cross the Rokin was blocked by police vehicles during the cordon. Ribbons were stretched at all alleys from Kalverstraat and officers were ready to block shortcuts to Rokin.

A garbage collector was pacing in the Papenbroeksteeg around half past seven until he was allowed to continue: he was ordered to get out of his garbage truck on the Rokin. He doesn’t know what’s going on. “Maybe I can get back to work in an hour.” Tourists who stayed overnight in Hotel Rokin also knew nothing about it. “We’re trying to get back to our hotel. They didn’t tell us anything,” says Californian tourist Bryan (21). His traveling companion Jack (21): “We went to get food, half an hour later it was all closed.”
