Ukraine has lowered the minimum age at which people can be drafted into the army during a mobilization. The age increases from 27 to 25 years.

After more than two years of war with Russia, the Ukrainian armed forces have been asking for a new mobilization for months. There would be too few troops and the soldiers at the front would need to be relieved. In December, the army leadership called for a mobilization of 450,000 to 500,000 people.

The Ukrainian parliament voted in favor of the law in May last year, making more reservists available for military call-up. But President Volodymyr Zelensky hesitated, possibly because a new mobilization is unpopular among the people. He signed the law on Tuesday. It is not clear how many additional soldiers the law could generate.

It is also not known how many people have been called up in Ukraine so far. The call for a new mobilization is also becoming increasingly louder and louder in Russia. In recent months, both Ukraine and Russia have made few territorial gains.

Since the start of the war – more than two years ago – Ukrainians have been fleeing abroad because they do not want to join the army. The Netherlands, among others, will not extradite them to the Ukrainian authorities.
