Asylum seekers arrive at the registration center of the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) in Ter Apel.

According to the weekly figures from the Ministry of Justice and Security, approximately a thousand people applied for asylum last week. In the same week last year there were around nine hundred applications.

About 12,600 asylum applications have been registered since the beginning of this year. In 2022 and 2023 it took until the end of April to reach that level. In 2019, the last year before the corona pandemic and global travel restrictions, there were only about the same number of asylum applications at the beginning of June as there are now at the end of March.

The ministry’s figures are rounded to the nearest hundred every week. The exact number of asylum applications is therefore unknown. Moreover, this not only concerns new applications, but also, for example, following travelers. They may come to the Netherlands to join a family member who has been granted asylum. People who apply for asylum again are also included in the figures.
