Denzel Dumfries was left in the dust on Monday after his remarkable action during the title celebration of his club Internazionale. The Dutch international does not think it is useful that he showed a banner on which he chained his AC Milan colleague Theo Hernández.

Dumfries received the textile from fans on Sunday and showed it to the audience in Milan for a few seconds. The photoshopped image was a reference to a recent clash between Dumfries and Hernández in the Milan derby. Both players then received red.

Images of the parade quickly circulated on social media. Dumfries regrets it a day later. “I love rivalry in football, it is a crucial part of our sport. I realize that holding up the banner was an error of judgment on my part. It was not very smart.”

Inter secured the title in the derby with AC Milan last week. The team of coach Simone Inzaghi only celebrated the trophy on Sunday after the home match against Torino (2-0). Dumfries did not participate due to a suspension due to the red card against Milan.

The 28-year-old Dumfries is in his third season in Milan, after coming over from PSV in 2021. In the coming weeks, the right wing defender will prepare for the European Championships in Germany. The Netherlands is divided in the group stage with Poland, France and Austria. The first match against Poland is on June 16.
