Bahrain Victorious is going for the final podium in the Giro d’Italia with Damiano Caruso and Antonio Tiberi. In the sprints, the fast German Phil Bauhaus is again looked at. Earlier today it was announced that Wout Poels will not participate in the Tour of Italy.

Poels will not appear at the start of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday. The experienced climber would have liked to ride the Tour of Italy himself. “But the team would prefer that I prepare for other important races later this year. Unfortunately, but that is also part of professional sports. By the way, I am still a reserve, so if something unexpected happens to the other riders, I am ready to step in,” he said. A.D.

The team is counting on two Italians for the rankings, the very experienced Damiano Caruso (36) and the young Antonio Tiberi (22). Caruso was already second in his home round in 2021 and finished fourth in the rankings last year. Tiberi has not yet been at the start of the Giro, but makes no secret of his ambitions. “I’m aiming for a top 5,” he said in conversation with CyclingFlits.

“We dream of a podium place with Antonio or Damiano, but we will have to see how things go every day,” says sports director Gorazd Štangelj. “Anything can happen and you have to be focused from the start. We can compete with this team.”

Bahrain Victorious hopes to be able to make a difference with Bauhaus in the flat (sprint) stages. The fast German was already successful on Italian soil this year, with a stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico. Jasha Sütterlin and Andrea Pasqualon have to pilot him as best as possible. Edoardo Zambanini, Torstein Træn and ‘possible surprise’ (dixit Štangelj) Rainer Kepplinger complete the selection.
