One of the last meetings of the European Parliament has been interrupted by a dove of peace. The white dove was released by a Slovak MEP who opposes support for Ukraine. The bird was not easy to catch.

During his parting words in the meeting room in Strasbourg, outgoing MEP Miroslav Radacovsky took a pigeon from a shoulder bag. He then released the bird “to symbolize that Europe needs peace”.

“Let this dove fly over all of Europe, let this dove unite us all,” said the Slovak nationalist as the bird flew through the meeting room.

“Can you catch it too?”, the chairman shouted. But Radacovsky made no move. Rushing staff tried to catch the bird, but in vain. The pigeon made a circle around the room and looked for a spot higher up.

Radacovsky received some applause, but also disapproval. A colleague spoke of the animal suffering as a shame. The chairperson agreed with her. He reported the incident to Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

The European Parliament opens on Thursday for the European elections in June. The new Parliament will take office in mid-July.
