The number of people who contract the venereal disease gonorrhea continues to increase significantly. The increase among women and heterosexual men aged up to 25 is particularly striking.
This is evident from new figures from the RIVM. These are people who had themselves tested in the past year at a Sexual Health Center of the GGD. The RIVM has no explanation for the rapid increase.
Gonorrhea was diagnosed 13,853 times in the Netherlands last year. That is almost 31 percent more than in 2022, when 10,600 cases were registered. Compared to 2020, there has even been an increase of almost 77 percent. Then 7,842 people contracted the STD.
About half of the cases involve men having sex with men. That is about 20 percent more than in 2022. But the largest increase can be seen among women and heterosexual men under the age of 25. The number of gonorrhea cases increased by 78 percent and 51 percent respectively.
The STD mainly occurs in people with a Dutch background and in people with a high level of education.
Little change is seen in other venereal diseases. The number of cases of chlamydia fell slightly, syphilis increased slightly and the number of HIV infections remained stable.
Wat is gonorroe?
Gonorroe is een soa die wordt veroorzaakt door een bacterie. Die bacterie kan tot infecties leiden. Denk aan ontstekingen aan de urinebuis, endeldarm en keel.
Mannen kunnen ook een infectie aan de bijbal krijgen. Bij vrouwen kunnen de baarmoederhals en eileiders ontstoken raken.
De soa veroorzaakt bij mannen bijna altijd klachten. Ze kunnen last krijgen van een branderig gevoel bij het plassen of een pusachtige afscheiding uit de penis, ook wel een druiper genoemd. Vrouwen hebben minder last van klachten.
