Venice has already sold ten thousand entrance tickets at 8:30 am on Thursday to tourists who want to visit the Italian city for a day, local authorities report. From today, day trippers must have such a ticket on certain days.

Visitors are informed at the train station that they must purchase a ticket for 5 euros. Tourists do not have to go through an entrance gate, but can be checked in the city. Day trippers who do not have a ticket risk a fine of 50 to 300 euros.

The new system is intended to put a brake on the enormous visitor numbers on the busiest days of the year. Only on those busy days do day trippers have to buy a ticket.

Venice has classified 29 days as busy days this year. The board hopes to get tourists to come and admire the Venetian beauty on quiet days.

The entrance tickets are only mandatory for day tourists. An entrance ticket is therefore not necessary if you also spend the night in the city. In addition, an exception applies for children under the age of fourteen and people with disabilities.
