A thirteen-year-old boy has found a LEGO octopus on the beach of Cornwall, England. It is the ‘holy grail’ of a gigantic collection of LEGO figures that fell overboard from a cargo ship during a heavy storm in 1997.

During the heavy storm, no fewer than five million LEGO pieces ended up in the sea at Land’s End in the county of Cornwall. Those millions of LEGO bricks included 352,000 flippers, 97,500 diving tanks and 92,400 swords. The octopus is the rarest with 4,200 pieces.

In subsequent years, collectors found several LEGO pieces, but often missed out on the octopus. Thirteen-year-old Liutauras Cemolonskas is the top collector. His collection consists of no fewer than 789 LEGO pieces.

He collected them over the past two years, his father told the regional news agency PA Media. “The octopus was at the top of our wish list from the beginning. We didn’t expect to find the piece because it is so rare.”

Collector wants attention to plastic problem in the sea

Cemolonskas and his father found the piece on the beach of Marazion. Two days later, another LEGO octopus was coincidentally found there by Tracey Williams. She is the most famous collector and is behind the LEGO Lost at Sea project. With this project she hopes to collect many LEGO bricks and draw attention to the plastic problem in the sea.

“Due to a high tide with some stormy winds, a lot of plastic washed up on this beach, including many LEGO bricks,” she says. PA Media. “There’s something magical about finding the octopus. I found one once in the beginning in 1997, but I didn’t find one again until 18 years later.”

Meanwhile, the thirteen-year-old boy from Cornwall continues his search. He now has his sights set on one of the 33,941 dragons that disembarked.
