Former Nigerian international and ex-Ajax player Tijjani Babangida has been seriously injured in a car accident in Nigeria, Nigerian media report. His younger brother Ibrahim, a former FC Volendam player, did not survive the accident.

Tijjani Babangida is reportedly in critical but stable condition. The accident happened on the highway from Kaduna to Zaria. Tijjani Babangida’s wife was also in the car and she was also admitted to hospital in Zaria due to her injuries.

The now 50-year-old Tijjani Babangida started his Dutch career in 1991 at Roda JC, played on loan for VVV-Venlo and moved to Ajax in 1996, where he was under contract until 2003. The fast winger also played for Vitesse on a rental basis.

Tijjani Babangida won Olympic gold with Nigeria at the 1996 Games and was part of the ‘Super Eagles’ selection at the 1998 World Cup. He is currently president of the Organization of Nigerian Professional Players.

Ibrahim Babangida became world champion in Japan in 1993 with Nigeria under 17. He played for Volendam from 1997 to 2002. Ibrahim Babangida turned 47 years old,
