The police in Amsterdam arrested more than a hundred people at the Extinction Rebellion demonstration this afternoon on the A10 ring road. About thirty of them are suspected of deliberately causing road hazards. The rest were arrested for, among other things, violating the Public Manifestations Act.
The demonstration started just after noon. According to the police, eight cars blocked the highway in two places in a life-threatening manner. This brought traffic to a standstill and activists were able to walk onto the road near the former ING headquarters. They demanded that the bank immediately stop financing the fossil industry. After police intervention, traffic was allowed to flow again at 1:45 p.m.

Earlier today, about thirty pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked the Piet Heinkade at Amsterdam Central station. This led to frustrated reactions from road users, the police said. The demonstrators left before police ended the blockade.
The police complain that activists chose a day when a lot is already being asked of the Amsterdam police. “On one of the busiest days of the year for the Amsterdam police, even more was asked on various fronts. Police officers having to be withdrawn from the city to remove prohibited blockades, that literally means a reduction in police deployment. in other places in the city,” the police said.
