Haije Dijkstra, from auction house Ald Fryslân, tells RTL Nieuws: “The drawing shows thirteen princesses and a prince. The work was given as a gift by the princess to one of the ladies-in-waiting and was auctioned at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam in 2006. ended up due to the death of the lady-in-waiting. Here it fetched 12,000 euros.”

The buyer at the time, a Frisian private individual, is now auctioning his entire collection, including Beatrix’s painting.

Lot number 393

The auction starts at 7:30 PM tonight and the painting falls under lot number 393. Dijkstra expects the watercolor to be sold around 9:00 PM.

“The starting bid has been set at 4,000 euros, and we think the painting will ultimately fetch between 6,000 and 8,000 euros,” said the auctioneer.

Merits Beatrix

Does the auction also yield anything for the artist herself? “Beatrix could use the resale right,” says Dijkstra. This means that the original maker receives a share of the sales price.

But the auctioneer does not expect this to happen. “This is not the case now, because Beatrix is not registered. She has never registered, so we don’t think she will do so.”

Beatrix could, however, arrange this retroactively for another year, if she wanted to.
