Japan uses artificial intelligence to prevent bear attacks. A trial will start in the summer in which an AI system recognizes bears based on security camera images.

The AI system then sends an alert to the relevant authorities. The trial starts in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. If successful, Japan will expand the system to prefectures where bears are regularly spotted near residential areas.

The bears probably come more often to inhabited areas because food sources are scarce, the news agency reports Kyodo.

Japan is launching the trial because the number of bear attacks on humans has increased. In the period April 2023 to last March, the country had 198.

According to Japanese media, 219 victims were killed, 6 of whom died. That’s the largest number since information about bear attacks in Japan became available in 2006.
