From tomorrow, children under the age of 13 will no longer be allowed to walk alone on the streets in Nice between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. The French municipality then imposes a curfew for children.

The reason is a series of violent incidents in France involving young people. For example, at the beginning of this month a 15-year-old boy from Viry-Châtillon, just below Paris, died after being beaten up by a group of young people. This weekend a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Châteauroux. A peer has been arrested.

In 2009 there was also a curfew for children in Nice. According to the mayor, it is now necessary again. Children who are alone on the street after 11 p.m. can receive a fine of 750 euros. Consideration is also being given to introducing the measure for 14, 15 or 16 year olds.

More curfews

Nice is not the only place where such a curfew applies. Since last week, minors are no longer allowed to go out at night in Pennes-Mirabeau near Marseille, and this is also the case in the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe.

Béziers, in the south of the country, also introduced a curfew this month in the city center and two other neighborhoods. Perpignan is still considering the same type of measure.

Educational measures

France has been struggling with violent incidents involving young people for some time. Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Attal presented a package of measures for education.

For example, students must stay at school between eight in the morning and six in the evening and children who misbehave are given a note in their file. Parents must sign a contract promising good behavior. If this contract is not respected, the parents can receive community service.
