At least fifty traffic fines are registered annually on almost three hundred license plates, according to figures from the CJIB. It is not certain whether this always concerns the same directors.

The total number of annual violations of the 300 license plates amounts to approximately 25,000, reports the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB). Most of these involve speeding violations.

More than 31,000 drivers in the Netherlands have more than ten violations to their name. This is evident from research by BNR News Radio, who requested the figures from the CJIB. This does not concern serious crimes, but minor traffic violations.

Consider exceeding the maximum speed limit within built-up areas by up to 30 kilometers per hour or exceeding the speed limit by up to 40 kilometers per hour on the highway. The fines for those minor violations are called Mulder fines. More serious offences, such as driving without a driver’s license or driving under the influence, are not included.

Repeat offenders are not punished more severely

After a driver has paid the fine, the incident is resolved. It is therefore not the case that someone can be punished more severely after multiple violations.

It is also impossible to say how many drivers are behind a license plate. As a result, the CJIB cannot determine how often an individual makes a mistake. When calculating the figures, license plates of legal entities were not included, the agency says.

The CJIB reports that minor traffic violations due to speed are handled in this way. More serious offenses are dealt with under criminal law.

According to the CJIB, there was interest in the figures “at various levels”. In a few criminal cases it emerged that some suspects had committed many traffic violations. The figures have also been shared with the Ministry of Justice and Security.
