The flag on the head, where did that idea come from?
To interpret this, according to David van Berlo, chairman of the Dutch Association for Flag Studies, we have to go back to the 16th century. “In shipping, the inversion of the flag was used to indicate that a ship was in distress. The message now is often: I turn the flag, because our country is in need. That’s mostly an American custom, to flip the flag, to indicate an emergency. With the American flag you can clearly see that it hangs the other way around, that is not clear with all flags.”
