Three people were said to have been injured at the Meikermis in Groningen on Sunday evening. In the whirligig ‘Around the World’, which revolves at a height of sixty meters, several bowls are said to have collided with each other.

‘The mill suddenly started again’
Peter Steinfort, spokesman at city hall, confirms that three people were slightly injured at the attraction. “Normally, at the end of the ride, the whirligig comes to a stop a few meters above the platform and then the seats slowly lower straight down. Something went wrong there, because instead of quietly lowering straight, the mill suddenly started up again.”
According to the circumstances, the injured are doing well, Peter knows. “They were very shocked, but luckily did not have to go to hospital.”

According to the spokesperson, the operator immediately pressed the emergency button, but by then the damage was already done. “Several containers hit each other and the fences. It is probably an electronic malfunction, but that is being investigated.”

The carousel was shut down immediately after the incident. And that will remain so for the time being. Peter: ,,He met all permits and inspections. But something has happened. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and TUV (fair inspection service) are currently investigating the attraction. As long as there is not one hundred percent certainty that this will not happen again, our attraction is not allowed to open.”
