Northern maritime sector wants to become a global player for ‘green’ ships

The maritime sector in the Northern Netherlands combines all knowledge and expertise to take the big technological step to become a global player in `green’ propulsion technology for shipping and digitized shipbuilding. A consortium of 21 shipping companies, shipyards, suppliers, laboratories, colleges and the University of Groningen will receive an initial European subsidy of 1.4 million euros for the development of the development plans, according to a press release from Conoship.

The ‘Green Maritime Coalition’, founded on the initiative of the Groninger Maritime Board and Conoship International, aims to be at the forefront of the transition to large-scale zero-emission shipping and digitized shipbuilding. Techniques such as hydrogen propulsion, Redox-Flow batteries, VentiFoil wind propulsion, CO2– on-board capture and robotization of construction processes.

The Conoship eConowind unit is an auxiliary wind propulsion unit for ships, in the form of a 40-foot container with 2 fold-out ‘VentiFoils’: vertical wing profiles of 10 m high, equipped with innovative boundary layer extraction. Just as with sailing, wind power is directly converted into thrust for the ship, which results in lower fuel consumption at the same sailing speed and therefore less CO2 emissions.

Collaboration

“The energy transition offers the innovative Northern Netherlands maritime industry great opportunities to become a major global player in developing and supplying ‘green’ technologies for shipping,” said Guus van der Bles, Director Development of Conoship International. “Collaboration between technology developers, builders, shipping companies and knowledge institutions is essential for this, together with digitizing the construction processes to build future emission-free ships in the Northern Netherlands as well. Support from the Province, ERDF and SNN stimulates joint planning and accelerates innovations and development in this region.”

Ship stores emitted CO2 itself while sailing

The Rotterdam Value Maritime says it is the first worldwide with the option of capturing and storing CO2 while sailing.

1.4 million

On Wednesday 13 July, the Groningen deputy IJzebrand Rijzebol handed over a check to the initiators of the innovation project: 1.4 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). “The maritime sector in the Northern Netherlands is innovative and strong and it is of great importance for employment. In the coming years, this sector will make and direct the transition to sustainable shipping. I am delighted that this challenge is being taken up in a unique collaboration between the business community and knowledge institutions. A Northern maritime innovation ecosystem can develop into a job engine.”
