Cycling talent plays heroic role during race by stopping runaway horse | Cycling

--

The promising peloton was startled by an out of control horse in the Arden Challenge on Thursday. Belgian rider Lars Daniels prevented accidents by grabbing the reins and slowing down the horse.

At 10 kilometers from the finish of the first stage in the Arden Challenge, the horse suddenly appeared behind the peloton. 23-year-old Daniels, who grew up at a riding school, immediately intervened.

“I thought to myself, yeah, how do I fix this,” Daniels said The newspapaer. “Because the horse kept storming. If the animal were to run into the peloton or be hit by the support vehicles, the damage would be incalculable.”

“I decided to ride next to it to reassure the horse a bit. I grabbed the reins and hit the brakes as hard as I could to bring the animal to a stop.”

After his heroic act, Daniels was able to rejoin the peloton. The Cycling Team Kontich rider ultimately finished 93rd.

The incident is reminiscent of last year’s Strade Bianche Donne. Demi Vollering was then startled in the final phase by a runaway horse. The Dutch rider from SD Worx-Protime was just able to avoid the animal and ultimately took the victory.
