Liberty Media has been the owner of Formula 1 for several years. Under the company’s leadership, the premier class of motorsport has become even more global. This year a record number of 24 grands prix are on the calendar.

The MotoGP is the most important class in motorsport. The Spanish company Dorna owns the commercial and broadcast rights. Dorna will retain the remaining 14 percent of the shares.

Loyal fans

“We are thrilled to expand our portfolio of industry-leading live sports and entertainment with the acquisition of MotoGP,” said Libery Media CEO Greg Maffei. “MotoGP is a global competition with a loyal, enthusiastic fan base and a favorable financial profile. We plan to expand this sporting spectacle even further globally.”

“This is the perfect next step in the development of MotoGP and we are excited to see what this acquisition will bring to the sport and its fans,” said Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

TT Assen

In Formula 1, three-time world champion Max Verstappen is the Dutch eye-catcher. There is no Dutch input in MotoGP. There are riders active in Moto2 and Moto3, the lighter classes to which Dorna also owns the rights. Zonta van den Goorbergh and Bo Bendsneyder compete in Moto2, Collin Veijer competes in Moto3.

The Dutch Grand Prix at the Zandvoort circuit has returned to Formula 1 since 2021. The Assen TT has been continuously part of the World Championship road race since its introduction in 1949, which is now held under the name MotoGP.
