There is a lot to say about the opening time trial of the Tour of the Basque Country. Even before the start of the time trial, Tom Pidcock was transported to hospital after a fall during the reconnaissance, but during the time trial not everything went smoothly for Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel.

Roglic currently has the fastest time at the finish in Irun, but strangely enough the Slovenian from BORA-hansgrohe did not even have a flawless time trial. In one of the last bends he shot straight ahead, where he should have turned left. However, Roglic remained icy calm, turned around calmly and quickly and continued his way to the actual finish. Here he managed to achieve a very strong finishing time (12:34).

Roglic turned out to be no less than eleven seconds faster than Remco Evenepoel at the finish, but there are also extenuating circumstances for the current world time trial champion. The leader of Soudal Quick-Step crashed just after the start, in the second corner. Evenepoel then had to continue his way with torn pants, but managed to limit the damage to the line to about ten seconds.
