FC Groningen has won the third period title in the Kitchen Champion Division. The northerners won 0-3 on Monday at FC Emmen, the former club of Groningen coach Dick Lukkien, and are now second.

FC Groningen was already 0-2 ahead of De Oude Meerdijk after twenty minutes. Thom van Bergen opened the score in the thirteenth minute by heading home from a corner kick. Five minutes later, Leandro Bacuna doubled the lead with a hard shot in the intersection.

Romano Postema made it 0-3 after more than an hour of play. The attacker took advantage of a misunderstanding in Emmen’s defense and scored his seventeenth competition goal of the season.

Lukkien won with FC Groningen against his old club FC Emmen. The 52-year-old trainer had the Drenthe under his wing for seven years from 2016 and moved to Groningen last summer.

The match between FC Emmen and FC Groningen was initially scheduled for January 19. Due to a virus outbreak among the visitors, the match was canceled.

FC Groningen even became period champions with a 13-0 defeat

FC Groningen had even secured the period title with a 13-0 defeat. Before the match against Emmen, Groningen had the same number of points as number two FC Dordrecht, but that team had a much lower goal difference (20-4 to 16-13). The period title also ensures that Lukkien’s team will participate in the promotion/relegation play-offs.

In the regular rankings, FC Groningen temporarily takes over second place from Roda JC. The Limburgers can regain that place if they win at Jong PSV on Monday evening (kick-off 8 p.m.). The numbers one and two in the rankings will be promoted directly to the Eredivisie at the end of the season.
