Johan Derksen slams Jasper Cillessen after playing hero against PSV

Johan Derksen has nothing good to say about Jasper Cillessen. The 34-year-old closing post from NEC became the match winner against PSV on Saturday evening (3-1 win) by saving a penalty from Luuk de Jong ten minutes before the end, after which the goalkeeper was very upset. Afterwards Cillessen also had a bone to pick ESPNreporter Milan van Dongen.

NEC was the first team in the current Eredivisie season to treat PSV to a defeat on Saturday. For Cillessen, De Jong’s stopped penalty was extra special, because he had never previously saved a penalty in the Eredivisie. This caused the necessary discharge from the experienced goalkeeper, who decided to confront Van Dongen in an interview afterwards.

According to Cillessen, the reporter had… ESPN laughed at him in a podcast after the NEC goalkeeper took a penalty against RKC Waalwijk last month. However, because Cillessen had left his line too early, the penalty had to be taken again.

Criticism of Cillessen

Cillessen’s heroic role will be discussed on Monday evening during a broadcast of Today Inside. “Did you have the impression that Cillessen was happy that he took that penalty from Luuk de Jong?” Genee asks his table guests.

“I had the idea that stopping a penalty was building up a bit in his mind,” René van der Gijp responds. “The discharge was over the top. You are happy and it is great fun to save a penalty, but if you celebrate it like that, then you are also very proud.”

Derksen is hard on Cillessen and mentions the goalkeeper’s cheering after the stopped penalty and the interview he gave afterwards. ESPN gave ‘ridiculous’ and ‘very unprofessional’. “He was still screaming afterwards. It is of course very ridiculous how he behaved.”

“It is very unprofessional to cheer like a crazy person, like a child. What René says is correct: it bothered him so much, because he had indeed never taken a penalty in the Eredivisie,” Derksen concludes.
