Danny van Poppel was reinstated on Tuesday after winning the sprint in the third stage of the Tour of Turkey. The Dutchman from BORA-hansgrohe was the best in the sprint, but was put back because he had hindered Giovanni Lonardi.

Italian Lonardi was still awarded the stage victory after the 147.4 kilometer stage between Fethiye and Marmaris. His compatriot Enrico Zanoncello came second, ahead of German Max Kanter.

After the hilly part of the stage with three climbs, the escapees were caught back and it was up to the sprinters in Marmaris. Ramon Sinkeldam and Robbe Ghys from Alpecin-Deceuninck started the sprint, but Van Poppel had the best acceleration, although he deviated slightly from his line.

The 27-year-old Lonardi felt that he had been hindered by the Dutchman and successfully protested. With the victory, he also took the lead in the general classification of the stage race.

The Tour of Turkey lasts until Sunday. Fabio Jakobsen won the first stage on Sunday.
