Austrian ski legend Hirscher (35) makes his return as a Dutchman after five years | Sport

The Dutch Ski Association (NSkiV) confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday morning, after the Austrian Ski Association had already reported the news earlier in the day. “We are delighted with Marcel’s choice,” says NSkiV technical director Wopke de Vegt.

Hirscher is considered one of the best skiers of all time. He retired in 2019 after an impressive career. Hirscher won the overall World Cup eight times and achieved 67 victories in World Cup competitions. He also owns seven world titles and two Olympic gold medals.

Hirscher has a Dutch mother and therefore also has Dutch nationality. In the past, Hirscher competed under the Austrian flag. Now he will play for the Netherlands.

“We hope this will be of great value to not only skiing, but all snow sports covered by the NSkiV,” says De Vegt. “We will not only benefit from his sporting contribution, but also from the wealth of knowledge and experience that he will share with us.”

The Austrian ski association says it is disappointed with Hirscher’s choice, but has nevertheless given him a free pass to the Dutch association. Next season Hirscher will ride with an NSkiV license.

“We obviously deeply regret his decision to request a change of nation, but in the end we unanimously approved his decision,” the Austrian Ski Association said.

Hirscher’s goal is to qualify for the 2025 World Cup in Saalbach, near his home in Austria. However, Hirscher has to catch up considerably in terms of points to be able to return to the highest level. He wants to achieve those points in competitions in New Zealand next summer.

Hirscher is supported in his plans by energy drink giant Red Bull, with which he founded the ski brand Van Deer in 2019.
