Liverpool have again suffered a blow in the battle for the English league title. Jürgen Klopp’s team lost 2-0 to Everton in the Merseyside Derby. It is the first time since October 2010 that Everton has managed to beat their arch rival at home. The Toffees give themselves some breathing space in the fight against relegation.
Klopp decided to change his team in no fewer than six places compared to the won league match against Fulham (1-3) last weekend. Ryan Gravenberch moved to the reserve bench, Cody Gakpo was not even in the selection.
The former PSV player’s girlfriend is about to give birth to their first child and so Gakpo was missing from Goodison Park. Virgil van Dijk was therefore the only Dutchman in the starting line-up. Arnaut Danjuma started on the bench at Everton.
Everton thought they were taking the lead after just six minutes of play. Dominic Calvert-Lewin rounded Alisson Becker and went to the ground, whereupon the referee pointed to the spot. However, the English striker had been offside in the run-up to the attack, which quickly ruined the party.
On the other hand, Mohamed Salah offered two teammates an unmissable opportunity in front of an open goal, if it were not for Ben Godfrey sliding in just in time to prevent danger. Sean Dyche’s team certainly did not lack fighting spirit in the city derby.
After half an hour of play, the home team was rewarded for its hard work when the ball suddenly landed at Jarred Branthwaite’s feet and the ex-PSV player was able to finish from close range: 1-0. Branthwaite would go on to become one of the best players on the field.
When Darwin Núñez bumped into Jordan Pickford in the remainder of the first half, Salah aimed over in two instances and Pickford also made a great save from an Andy Robertson effort, people really started to believe in it at Goodison Park.
Soon after the break, that belief took even more shape. Alisson first had a nice reaction to a shot from Dwight McNeil, but had no chance in the corner that followed from a header from Calvert-Lewin: 2-0.
Liverpool pressed on for the remainder of the match and had opportunities to reduce the tension, but Luis Díaz hit the inside of the post and Salah was also not in the clear. The title seems out of sight for now the Reds.
