Feyenoord postpones PSV title celebration with victory at Go Ahead Eagles | Football

--

Feyenoord postponed PSV’s title celebration on Thursday. The team of Liverpool coach Arne Slot won 1-3 at Go Ahead Eagles, meaning PSV can only become champions next Sunday.

Earlier in the evening, PSV recorded a historic 0-8 victory over Heerenveen and would win the 25th national title in club history if number two Feyenoord did not win against middle-ranked Go Ahead Eagles at De Adelaarshorst.

After a quick 0-2 lead, Feyenoord’s victory was not in danger, even though Go Ahead Eagles scored the tying goal just before half time. The visitors mainly failed to achieve a bigger result.

PSV will therefore play the championship match against Sparta Rotterdam in its own Philips Stadium next Sunday. Due to PSV’s much better goal difference (+86 to +55), Feyenoord can only in theory catch up with the Eindhoven team in the last three matches.

Troubles surrounding Slot drown out cup victory

Feyenoord celebrated their cup victory on Monday with tens of thousands of enthusiastic fans at the Binnenrotte. The euphoria in Rotterdam quickly disappeared when it became clear that coach Slot was in the interest of Liverpool.

Slot admitted before the match against Go Ahead Eagles that he wants to move to the English top club after this season and that the clubs are negotiating a buyout sum. The end of an era therefore seems imminent at Feyenoord.

The match against Go Ahead Eagles was almost forgotten. The Feyenoord players did not seem to be bothered by the troubles surrounding their coach. With Justin Bijlow and not Timon Wellenreuther under the bar and Ayase Ueda in place of Santiago Giménez, who dropped out in the warm-up, Feyenoord quickly took the lead.

A shot by Luka Ivanusec, the replacement for the injured Igor Paixão, fell off the underside of the crossbar and the back of Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange after more than 24 minutes of play: 0-1. PSV, still present in Heerenveen, knew what time it was.

Assist Steng’s highlight

Feyenoord was loose and doubled the score eight minutes later. After a flowing attack via Quinten Timber and Yankuba Minteh, Ivanusec finished flawlessly in the far corner. It seemed like it had already been played in Deventer at the time.

Out of nowhere, Go Ahead Eagles brought the tension back into the match just before half time. Oliver Edvardsen headed in the tying goal from close range after a measured cross from Bobby Adekanye: 1-2.

Feyenoord did not encounter any problems and decided the match through Ueda halfway through the second half. The Japanese crowned a sublime through ball from Calvin Stengs with the outside of the foot to score: 1-3. It was only the third Eredivisie goal of the season for Ueda.

PSV’s postponed title celebration will be a footnote in Rotterdam. The coming period at Feyenoord will revolve around the farewell tour of success coach Slot. In any case, it started with a victory.
