Matthijs de Ligt may miss Bayern Munich’s first match in the semi-finals of the Champions League against Real Madrid on Tuesday. The Dutch international is struggling with a knee injury, which he sustained on Saturday in the 2-1 Bundesliga match against Eindtracht Frankfurt.

De Ligt was left behind in the dressing room in the Allianz Arena halfway through, after having been treated for a knee earlier on the field. The participation of Konrad Laimer, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané in the first of two matches against Real is also uncertain.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel stated afterwards that 24-year-old De Ligt had pain in the inner ligament of one knee. The coach could not yet say whether he had recovered in time for the cracker against Real Madrid. “We have to see what happens on Tuesday,” Tuchel said, also referring to Laimer and Musiala.

After half an hour, Laimer was treated for his foot and was substituted. Musiala was not part of the match selection. He had to leave the last training session prematurely on Friday. “It’s a tendon injury that keeps bothering him,” Tuchel said. Sané has an injury to his pubic bone. “We are doing everything we can to get him fit, so is he,” said sporting director Max Eberl.

De Ligt has made a good impression at Bayern in recent weeks

It would be a major setback for Bayern and De Ligt if the defender is not available against Real on Tuesday. The former Ajax player missed many games this season due to injuries, but has been on track in recent weeks and is certain of a starting place.

De Ligt also hopes to secure a starting place for the Dutch team for the European Championship in Germany in the coming weeks. Feyenoord player Lutsharel Geetruida seems to be his biggest competitor.

The semi-final between Bayern and Real starts on Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the Allianz Arena and a week later the return is in Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. The other semi-final is between Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
