Michael van Gerwen convincingly reached the third round of the Austrian Darts Open on Saturday. The multiple world champion, who wants to win his fifth title in Graz, was too strong for compatriot Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-1. Raymond van Barneveld was eliminated.

The 35-year-old Van Gerwen was allowed to skip the first round and achieved a high level against De Zwaan. Last Thursday, the Brabander was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Premier League evening in Liverpool. The third round is scheduled for Sunday in Graz and then there are also the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final.

Raymond van Barneveld lost 6-5 to Ross Smith on Saturday, meaning the tournament is over for him. Richard Veenstra was also eliminated. Stephen Bunting was too strong for the Dutchman with 6-5.

The Dutch meeting between Danny Noppert and Wessel Nijman was won 6-3 by Noppert. Dirk van Duijvenbode did not make it against Ritchie Edhouse (6-2).

Van Veen also to the third round

In addition to Noppert and Van Gerwen, there is another Dutchman in the tournament. Gian van Veen was too strong for Ryan Searle with 6-5, so he will also be in action on Sunday.

Van Gerwen can take the title at the Austrian Darts Open for the first time since 2022. He was also the best in 2013, 2016 and 2019. The only other Dutchman to have won the tournament is Vincent van der Voort, in 2014.

Last year, Jonny Clayton took the overall victory at the tournament that had its first edition in 2012. Van Gerwen’s opponent in the third round is two-time world champion Peter Wright.
