Collin Veijer has won a race in Moto3 for the second time in his career. After his victory in Malaysia last year, the motorcycle racer from Staphorst was the fastest in Jerez, Spain on Sunday.
Nineteen-year-old Veijer already made a strong impression in qualifying in Jerez on Saturday. He finished third and therefore started the race from the front row on Sunday.
David Alonso, a major competitor, soon crashed and Veijer led the race from the second lap. David Muñoz was in the wake of the Dutchman until the finish, who stayed cool and took his second victory in Moto3.
With his victory in Malaysia in November, Veijer was already the first Dutch motorcycle rider with a GP victory in 33 years. He was then the successor to Hans Spaan. The now 65-year-old Spaniard won the GP of what was then called Czechoslovakia in the 125cc in Brno in 1990.
Veijer has not reached the podium before this season
The Jerez GP was the fourth of a total of 21 races this season in Moto3. The Assen TT is the ninth race of the championship on June 30.
Veijer had not finished on the podium before this season. At the opening race in Qatar he finished fifth and in Portugal he finished sixth. Two weeks ago in the United States he was one of the dropouts.
Last season, Veijer reached the podium a total of twice. A week before his win in Malaysia, he finished third in Thailand.
