The eighth and final stage of the Tour of Turkey has been canceled due to bad weather conditions. Frank van den Broek of dsm-firmenich-PostNL is therefore assured of the overall victory.

“It is surprising that I win it,” said Van den Broek on the NPO Radio 1 program Langs de Lijn. “We were mainly here to prepare the sprint for Fabio Jakobsen. I was the only one given a free role and I am surprised that we managed to win here.”

Due to the heavy rainfall on the course, the organization did not consider it safe to continue the final stage to and from Istanbul over 105.4 kilometers.

The peloton did start, but of the planned five local rounds, only one remained on the program. And there was no longer a sprint for the win.

Frank van den Broek also surprises himself with a final win in Turkey

Van den Broek made his move in the sixth stage. The 23-year-old Dutchman from DSM won the queen stage on Friday and took over the lead from teammate Tobias Lund Andresen, who can also look back on a successful round with a total of three stage victories.

“We won five of the seven stages with our team. That is so special, I don’t think I will ever experience that again,” said Van den Broek.
