Michael van Gerwen, Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert were stranded on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the Austrian Darts Open in Premstätten, Austria. Four-time tournament winner ‘MvG’ lost hard against Ross Smith (6-1).

Van Gerwen qualified for the quarter-finals by beating Peter Wright earlier on Sunday. With Smith, the darts player from Vlijmen met the current number 15 in the world. Earlier at the tournament in Austria, the Englishman defeated Raymond van Barneveld, among others.

Smith took off and quickly took a 3-0 lead in legs, after which Van Gerwen was awarded his only leg. The three-time world champion threw an average of only 90.61 and did not throw a single 180’er. The English darts player (97.16) took advantage of six of his eight chances for doubles.

Before Van Gerwen’s match, Van Veen (103.37) already lost against Joe Cullen (104.49). In an entertaining match, both dart players were not inferior to each other, but the global number 16 turned out to be stronger than the Dutchman.

The legs went with the darts until the eighth leg, until Van Veen was broken. Cullen struck from 70 and then also held his own leg, securing a spot in the semi-finals.

Noppert (90.15) was allowed to continue hoping for a result in his match with Luke Littler (98.27), because ‘The Nuke’ was particularly sloppy on his doubles (six out of seventeen attempts). There even had to be a decisive leg. The British teenage sensation turned out to be the strongest in this regard. Littler also eventually won the tournament by beating Cullen in the final (8-4).
