According to Rafael van der Vaart, more Ajax icons should work at the club. There is currently a lack of football know-how and Ajax DNA at the club, the ex-international believes.

During the day Rondo a photo of the former supervisory board of Ajax is shown, showing Georgette Schlick, Cees van Oevelen, Annette Mosma, Pier Eringa and Jan van Halst. However, Marco van Basten sees too little football knowledge in the photo. “These five people, including Jan, must ensure that Ajax makes sensible decisions regarding purchases, sales and the like. Jan knows a little about football, but I don’t see the other four on the football field. They don’t seem like football players to me. “I’m just talking about what happens on the field, that is ultimately the basis.”

Van Halst then tries to put forward some arguments against this. “You could argue whether there should be more people with a football background on Ajax’s supervisory board. But Ajax is not just a football club. It is also a listed company.” Van Basten finds the (former) relationships at the club particularly skewed. “True, but Ajax is 99% football. These five are 80% business and nothing about football. That’s a bit crazy.”

The question is what the solution is for the club in crisis, but Van der Vaart does have an idea. “Let’s just say it how it is. You (Van Basten, ed.) should work at Ajax, I should work at Ajax, Sneijder, Nigel de Jong.” Jan van Halst interrupts the former midfielder. “I still asked you, man!” Raf responds curtly and then continues with his monologue. “Yes, we have spoken. But that simply doesn’t happen. Of course I now live in Romania, which is a bit difficult for me. Me and Jan had a very good conversation and I actually wanted to, but it just wasn’t possible in private.”

Van der Vaart then asks Van Basten if he would like to pull Ajax out of the swamp. “I don’t, no, just not in general,” the former striker responds. “There must be guys who want to help. There are still plenty of football players who can still do something in the Netherlands.” Van Basten was asked by Ajax, just like many other Ajax players, says Van Halst. “Everyone said ‘no’ to that for their own reasons. I thought so. Shame.”
