This coming weekend, Eugene Omalla will be part of the Dutch team that will compete in the 4×400 meters at the World Championship relay in the Bahamas. The African indoor record holder has recently been allowed to compete for the Netherlands.

Omalla, like his twin brother Jamie, was born in Zoetermeer. When they were seven, they moved to Uganda, their father’s country. Because they had not yet competed for Uganda, the international athletics association World Athletics recently allowed them to run under the Dutch flag from now on.

This year, Eugene Omalla set an indoor time of 45.18 for the 400 meters, an African indoor record. His brother Jamie has a personal record of 46.81 that is not even close.

The World Championship relay can earn starting tickets for next summer’s Olympic Games in Paris. The Dutch athletes have prepared for the tournament in Curaçao. Eugene Omalla already joined the team there.

In the Bahamas, 32 men’s and 30 women’s teams compete in the 4×100 meter relay. Furthermore, 32 men’s and 27 women’s teams participate in the 4×400 meter relay and another 30 teams participate in the mixed relay.

Churandy Martina is part of the team for the 4×100 meters. The 39-year-old sprinter hopes to participate in the Games for the sixth time in Paris. This would have to be done through a place in the relay team.
