Red Bull Racing’s race weekend in Miami is all about the upcoming departure of Adrian Newey. The departure of the British top designer caused many reactions. Zak Brown stated that Newey is the first domino to fall, and according to Max Verstappen, the McLaren CEO is trying to stir things up a bit.

Newey’s departure is a new chapter in Red Bull’s troubled year. After the investigation into team boss Christian Horner and the stories about an internal power struggle, Newey’s departure comes at a painful time. Newey himself stated that his choice has nothing to do with the current unrest, and Red Bull stated that they are not worried at all about a possible collapse.

Stoking

McLaren CEO Zak Brown called on Friday that Newey is the first domino to fall at Red Bull. Max Verstappen tells De Telegraaf that he can’t do anything with this at all: “Of course he wants to stoke the fire. As a team we can’t do anything with that at all. I understand this from his side. Everyone pulls on our people, that is very normal. I try not to worry about it too much. I see the headline of a message like that and then I don’t even click on it anymore.”

Long-term contracts

Verstappen does not think that many leaders will leave. One then wonders whether he has received certain guarantees from higher up: “There are indeed long-term contracts here, but in life you can never guarantee everything. I can’t wake up tomorrow either. Ultimately, you don’t know anything for one hundred percent. Ultimately agreements are made, but it is also about everyone being happy with their work and feeling appreciated.”
