John van ‘t Schip does not expect to be able to rely on Kristian Hlynsson this season. The midfielder has problems with his thigh and although he was close to a return, that does not seem to be possible for the time being.

In the warm-up for the home match against FC Twente, the Icelander was successful, who was immediately in the starting line-up for that match and ultimately did not participate. Since then he has had to miss Ajax matches. “He was on his way back, but he had a small setback this week,” Van ‘t Schip responds after the FC Volendam – Ajax match. ‘It has fallen off very slightly again, so I think it will be difficult for this season.’

One player who successfully returned on Sunday after injuries is Jordan Henderson. Despite the artificial grass in Volendam, Van ‘t Schip did not hesitate to appoint the leader. ‘It’s more the moment when he really felt he was ready. Last week was just too early. He has now been able to train a large part.’

So Henderson, with the captain’s armband on his arm, appeared at the kick-off. He was important with an assist, but did not finish the match. ‘It was a good time to take him off. I was in contact with him about how things were going and it went well, but you don’t want to let him continue even though it is not necessary.’

Van ‘t Schip points out positive points

From the 1-4 win against FC Volendam, Van ‘t Schip mainly takes away that there are new players. Henderson and Steven Berghuis made minutes again, while Steven Bergwijn and Benjamin Tahirovic will return after a suspension next week against Almere City. ‘That gives a little more space and possibilities. In addition, it is nice that Kenneth (Taylor, ed.) scores two goals and Brian (Brobbey, ed.) and Chuba (Akpom, ed.) score. That gives confidence.’

That’s not the end of the compliments yet. Josip Sutalo also kicked off against FC Volendam and the Croat can count on Van ‘t Schip’s words of praise. ‘I think Sutalo has also shown that he is in good form in recent weeks. He’s had a hard time and I’m happy about that. He looks sharp, that’s positive.’
