Vollering catapults teammate Bredewold to victory in the Basque Country | Cycling

--

Cyclist Mischa Bredewold won the first stage of the Tour of the Basque Country on Friday. The European road champion was the fastest in a bunch sprint after a ride over 140 kilometers from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Elgoibar.

Bredewold benefited from the good work of Demi Vollering, her teammate at SD Worx-Protime, who started the sprint for her. Vollering himself finished third behind Bredewold and Cuba’s Arlenis Sierra.

With Talitha de Jong (Lotto Dstny) and Shirin van Anrooij (Lidl-Trek), two more Dutch riders finished among the first ten. Bredewold leads the general classification, four seconds ahead of Sierra and six ahead of Vollering.

Vollering won the Vuelta Femenina last Sunday. She did this in style by being the first to reach the top solo on the final climb. Later this year she will also ride the Tour de France Femmes.

The Tour of the Basque Country lasts until Sunday. The last two days have hilly stages on the program, just like Friday.
