Apple will be releasing its own new app for the iPad this fall, one that should have been available 14 years ago. And no, it’s not WhatsApp’s long-awaited iPad app.
Later this year the time has finally come: Apple would release its own Calculator app for the iPad. Sources reported this to MacRumors. The new app will be added in the update to iPadOS 18. The app is expected to be announced during Apple’s annual developer conference WWDC in June.
For the past 14 years, iPad users have had to do their calculations with third-party calculator apps like Calcbot, PCalc, and countless others. The lack of Apple’s own app is remarkable, because there has been an Apple Calculator app for iOS since the first iPhone.
Jobs rejected the first version in 2010
Steve Jobs rejected a draft version of the Calculator app for the first iPad in 2010 because he didn’t like the design. He gave software boss Scott Forstall the choice between developing a completely new calculator app for the tablet or leaving the app out. Forstall chose the latter option.
Then 14 years flew by without an Apple Calculator app for the tablet. Apple also took a very long time to develop the Weather app for the iPad, but it was finally released in 2022.
Also update for macOS
For macOS 15, Apple is also expected to release a major update to the Calculator app this fall, including better collaboration with the Notes app. The app would then also show an overview of the latest calculations in a sidebar on MacBooks and other Macs.
In the meantime, Meta is still testing its WhatsApp iPad app. The test version of the iPad app appeared in September 2023 for users of the WhatsApp beta iOS program on TestFlight. You can currently no longer register for this. It is not yet known when the iPad version of WhatsApp will be released for everyone.
New iPads
During an event on May 7, Apple will unveil its long-awaited new iPads. These are new models of the iPad Air and iPad Pro, with nicer screens and faster chips.
