Castricum – The DWS group (‘Day a Week school’) of the Passend Onderwijs IJmond partnership has won the third prize in a design competition of the Wageningen Science Hub. The theme of the competition was biodiversity. Six students from Castricum (Emma, Daphne, July, Sonja, Janek and Lennart) made a model to show how the biodiversity around their school building can be increased. Under the guidance of teacher Karin, they submitted a report and a film with an explanation of the model.

From 28 entries, 5 finalists were selected who were allowed to present their designs at Wageningen University last Wednesday. The jury was particularly impressed by the fact that the children in the DWS group had not only considered biodiversity above the ground, but also below ground. The third prize consists of a festive gift package and a plaque for the wall. The children will write to the municipality with a request to actually implement the plan. That plan includes planting native plants and attracting the right animals and fungi.
