‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ exceeds expectations and grosses $194 million during opening weekend | Movie

Where Godzilla and King Kong were beating each other to a pulp a year ago, the titans are now joining forces to save the world from a new monster and the audience seems to like that. In America, the film grossed $80 million, slightly less than ‘Dune: Part Two’, which started with $81.4 million. Much of its earnings outside the United States came from China, where the film grossed $44 million. Mexico and India also contributed to the overall profit figures of the monster mash-up.

With a production budget of $135 million, the film must sell a lot worldwide to cover its costs. But with this good start, it looks like it will make it past its predecessor ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ from 2021 will ultimately surpass it. The franchise, which kicked off in 2014 with director Gareth Edwards’s Godzilla, has collectively surpassed the $2 billion mark worldwide. After five films (and a TV series), the series has remained popular.

It is not the only film that is currently making the cinema box office ring. ‘Dune: Part Two’ has grossed $626 million after five weeks of worldwide release, while ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ has earned $347 million after four weeks. Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, meanwhile, also made its debut in Japan, where it grossed $2.5 million in its opening weekend, placing third at the box office behind two local films.
