Residents look at the affected school building in Odesa

At least 4 people have been killed in a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa. At least 32 people were also injured, seven of whom are in critical condition. Local administrators report this.

According to Governor Oleh Kiper of the Odesa region, one man also died after the attack from a heart attack caused by the rocket attack. Among the injured are a four-year-old, who is in life-threatening condition, another child and a pregnant woman.

The victims fell in and around a school building that houses a private law school, in a park near the sea. Many tourists and residents of the city also regularly go for a walk there. “Monsters, animals, scum. I don’t know what more to say about it,” Odesa Mayor Hennady Troekhanov responded via social media. “People come there for a walk, are shot at and killed.”

Cluster munitions

An eyewitness told the Reuters news agency that the school building was hit when the rocket was intercepted by anti-aircraft fire: “I saw how the rocket was shot down, then our door was blown open and the windows started to shake. And then I saw the building on fire.”

A spokesman for the Ukrainian navy said on Telegram that the school building was hit by a ballistic Iskander missile, which is more difficult to intercept than many other missiles. The missile was loaded with cluster munitions, which are notorious for causing many casualties.
